How Museum Display Cases Protect Cultural Relics
2024-07-13

How museum showcases protect cultural relics is a point that museum showcase manufacturers must consider when making cultural relic showcases, and it is also a point that cannot be ignored.

Below, the museum showcase manufacturer of Shichuang Museum will take you to look at the storage environment requirements of cultural relics.

The storage environment of cultural relics in my country is divided into two categories, namely inorganic cultural relics and organic cultural relics:

1. The overall storage environment of inorganic cultural relics is: temperature: 14-24℃, relative humidity 30-55%, illumination: 150-300 Lux, the atmospheric environment requires cleanliness, no dust, no acidic gas;

2. The overall storage environment of organic cultural relics is: temperature: 14-20℃, relative humidity 50-60%, illumination: 50Lux, no ultraviolet rays, the atmospheric environment requires cleanliness, no harmful gases, dustproof, insect-proof, and mildew-proof;

3. Since inorganic and organic cultural relics have different storage environment requirements, under the premise that the conditions of the archaeological site permit, the temporary cultural relic warehouse should have more than two houses, and the inorganic and organic cultural relics should be placed separately, and different indicators should be adjusted and controlled separately;

4. If conditions do not permit, there can only be one cultural relic warehouse, and the execution indicators of the temporary warehouse should be determined according to the main local environmental characteristics. If the local main environment is suitable for the preservation of organic cultural relics, the preservation environment of organic cultural relics should be used as the main environment of the temporary warehouse. Put the inorganic cultural relics in the cultural relic cabinet or cultural relic box for micro-environment control, and vice versa. If the bulk of the unearthed cultural relics belong to a certain type of cultural relics, the main environmental standards of the temporary warehouse should be formulated according to the needs of that type of cultural relics.

From the above national regulations, we can see that temperature and humidity, harmful light, and harmful gases are the key factors in the protection of cultural relics. Therefore, our Shichuang Museum Showcase Manufacturer should start from these aspects to improve the safety of cultural relics.

1. Improve the airtightness of museum showcases and isolate the entry of harmful gases

We often cooperate with some museums and often go to museums. During the visits, we often find that the showcases of some museums have poor sealing. Some showcases have been used for too long, resulting in aging of sealing strips or bending of glass, etc., which leads to a large amount of harmful gases entering the museum showcases. These harmful gases react chemically with the cultural relics in the museum collection, causing very serious irreversible damage to these precious cultural relics. Let's take common paintings as an example. For example, hydrogen sulfide reacts with pigments to cause these paintings to change color; for some textiles, chlorine easily hydrolyzes and oxidizes with fibers, causing them to gradually deteriorate. These damages are irreversible for cultural relics. How can we eliminate these hazards? The first point is to ensure that the showcases manufactured by the museum showcase manufacturer must have good sealing, and the showcases must be checked frequently. Once a problem is found, it should be dealt with in time to avoid causing greater harm to the cultural relics.

2. Museum showcases can effectively block harmful light

When it comes to harmful light, we have to mention ultraviolet rays. Ultraviolet rays are a kind of invisible light with high energy and strong destructiveness. Dyes will fade under the action of ultraviolet rays, causing irreversible damage to cultural relics such as textiles, ancient calligraphy and paintings. However, with the continuous development of museum showcase technology, current museum showcases can effectively block 99.9% of ultraviolet rays, fundamentally preventing ultraviolet rays from damaging cultural relics.

3. Museum showcases are conducive to the control of temperature and humidity

Relative humidity is an important factor affecting the integrity of cultural relics. When the relative humidity is higher than 65%, it will cause microbial growth, thus posing a threat to the integrity of cultural relics; when the relative humidity is lower than 30%, it will cause organic cultural relics to become brittle or peel off. The space inside the museum showcase belongs to a small environment, which is relatively easy to control. Therefore, for this type of cultural relics, we can install a constant temperature and humidity machine in the museum showcase to make separate adjustments according to the temperature and humidity required by the cultural relics.
